I did not restart the box though I did however have to stop SMTP and restart it along with Exchange and the mail started flowing again. Exchange knows to forward all outbounds (smart host) to itself on port 25. Surfcontrol is set to listen and send on 25.
SMTP (Exchange) is set to listen on 26, but send on 25. I also have a similiar problem: Exchange 2003 with Surfcontrol email filtering running on a frontend server. There's nothing in the event log or logfiles to tell us that there was any problem. The only solution we have found so far is to re-start the machine with SMTP disabled and manually remove the messages from the queue. We have an intermittant problem whereby the messages pending submission queue fills up and the whole of exchange grinds to a halt. We have recently upgraded from exchange 200 and now use GFI for antispam. Exchange 2003 in a small native mode AD domain.
